My gender reveal | DIY Nursery decor

I hope you enjoy my gender reveal story, and not only enjoy it but gain inspiration from it for your own gender reveal!

The idea

Funny story, my father went from having 0 grandbabies to 5 grandbabies in less then 2 years. It was like our very own mini baby boom, everyone was getting pregnant. To break it down for you, my brother and his wife had their first baby C before everyone. Then out of no where, surprise! I’m pregnant with EJ and my sister announced right around the same time that surprise! She’s pregnant with Z about 2 weeks further along then I am.

Halfway through both of our pregnancies my other brother and his girlfriend are surprise! Pregnant with their own C, and not too long after they announced, surprise! My brother and his wife are pregnant with their second E. For anyone keeping count, thats 5 babies in less then 2 years. I have two more sisters, one who’s too young to have babies, and the other one, we all held our breath because at this point it appears that something is in the water.

Don’t drink the water. You’ll end up pregnant. Maybe my other sister was spared because all she drinks is Dr. Pepper? Seriously. I don’t know if she knows what water is. Anyway. Back to the point.

Creating the gender reveal

If you didn’t catch on by now, this giant boom of babies meant that there was a lot of gender reveals going around. Let me tell you, my family is the creative bunch when it comes to gender reveals. Each one was completely unique and amazing, so I was under some pressure to not make mine a complete dud.

Not to mention my husband’s mother was visiting from South Africa. So we didn’t want a gigantic party because we wanted to spend as much one on one time with her as possible. I’m also the complete worst at planning and didn’t plan this til the last second. Even if we wanted to make it a giant party most of everyone was busy. My bad.

I scoured pinterest attempting to find something that would be amazing, leave us with wonderful memories and was not expensive. If you have ever been on pinterest for longer then five minutes, you know that it can be a bit of a task. Everything that says ‘fast and cheap’ really means, only cheap if you already have an entire craft store in your basement. Don’t even get me started. I love you pinterest but seriously.

The gender reveal

I finally found an idea I could adapt to suit us, thank goodness because I found it literally two days before so I was cutting it pretty close. What we ended up deciding on, and by we, I mean me since I was the only one that knew the gender, was using an arrow to pop a balloon full of paint.

It took my husband two shots to hit the balloon, he missed the first time. And yes. I am as white as the snow in the background, it makes my camouflage abilities excellent.

My husband thought he knew for sure that it was going to be a girl, so he bought pink arrows for the event, my dad got us two colors of paint and I got to fill the balloon. We then attached the balloon to a wooden board with some paper on it to catch the paint. DIY gender reveal! SO easy, and was a lot of fun when the balloon popped and everyone lost their marbles.

This is what I ended up doing with the board once it was all dry and I got home. It’s now hanging in my sons room and I have a post on how I created all the decor in his room! I could have kept just the white paper and framed it, but I didn’t want to lose any of the paint so I kept it this way.

The DIY Decor

The other reason I loved this idea is because we kept the board with the paper and the paint, and I used it to create decor for my sons nursery that is a memory of the day everyone found out he would by my little boy. I love looking at it and remembering that wonderful day, suddenly knowing what to call the tiny human inside of me. Feeling so much more connected to my son.

I also adore the quote ‘let him sleep for when he wakes he will move mountains.” I thought it was the perfect little saying to add in. I plan on adding a hand print of EJ’s as well as painting around the frame to make it look a bit cleaner. If this is something you are interested in doing for your gender reveal, you will have so SO many options to customize it for your family. It was a lot of fun for all of us, and getting the paint in the balloon was a mission and a half for me, but it was worth it.

If you try this out, let me know! Share with me your experience! Or even if your gender reveal was COMPLETELY different, share with me that! I would love to hear your story!
